What is the GAIN Future Fortified Campaign?

Over 12 million people in the Horn of Africa are at risk of disease and widespread malnutrition due to drought, escalating food prices and conflict. GAIN’s new Future Fortified campaign seeks to raise public and political will for nutrition as well as help millions of women and children around the world access essential nutrients.

In response to the crisis in Africa, Herbalife and DSM have made an initial joint commitment, which was announced at the Clinton Global Initiative on September 21, 2011, to provide cost-effective nutrition packets that will be distributed in Ethiopia and Kenya to enhance food assistance and fill basic nutritional gaps. As a second stage of this partnership, we will develop long term, market based business models utilizing the strengths of each partner to ensure that nutritious, affordable products remain accessible to vulnerable populations on a daily basis.

How Are We Helping?
Herbalife and DSM have made an initial contribution of 20 million MixMe™ powder packets. These special nutrient packs containing essential vitamins and minerals developed by DSM provide the Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) from UNICEF and the World Health Organization. The sachets can be sprinkled over a meal or a drink and provide people with their daily needs of essential vitamins and minerals they would not get with their poor daily diet. MixMe™ is especially suitable to combat malnutrition in infants as it does not have any taste and does not change color or consistency of the food. Simultaneously, we are exploring long-term, sustainable approaches to address the underlying causes of malnutrition in the region.
